6.Development of an Intelligent Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reduction Control System for Carbon-Sequestering Bio-Negative Devices

To address global warming, achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 has become a worldwide goal. In Taiwan, natural carbon sinks are identified as one of twelve key strategies for reaching net-zero. These sinks directly capture atmospheric carbon and include green carbon (forests), blue carbon (oceans), and yellow carbon (soils). Microalgae are highly efficient carbon-capturing organisms, with a sequestration capacity six times greater than trees. Surrounded by the ocean, Taiwan has a natural advantage for microalgal cultivation, making it a critical pathway toward national net-zero emissions.

Current microalgal cultivation faces several challenges:
1.Operations are largely manual and lack standardized procedures, limiting automation and digital transformation.
2.Compared to green carbon, quantification and verification of blue carbon are difficult, hindering industry development.
3.Incomplete scientific methods constrain policy advocacy and carbon credit trading for microalgal blue carbon.

This cross-disciplinary integrated project aims to develop an intelligent energy-saving and carbon-reduction control system for carbon-sequestering bio-negative devices in microalgal cultivation. The project comprises five subcomponents:
1.Promote blue carbon and establish an international digital trading platform for biological carbon credits (Humanities).
2.Develop carbon-sequestering bio-negative devices (Natural Sciences).
3.Build an ICT platform for the energy-saving and carbon-reduction control system (Engineering).
4.Develop an intelligent blue carbon credit management system (Engineering).
5.Develop an intelligent energy-saving and carbon-reduction system for blue carbon (Engineering).

The project will enable automated and intelligent microalgal cultivation, establish methodologies and policy frameworks for blue carbon credit conversion, and address key challenges in the field. The outcomes will significantly support Taiwan’s implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for net-zero carbon emissions.
